If you want to know how thrilled Liontown is with the government’s critical minerals production incentives, you could do worse than look to Canberra, where chairman and major shareholder Tim Goyder turned up on Wednesday to show his appreciation.
For those to whom the direct funding of political parties is a bridge too far, there’s always the National Press Club. Events are not fundraisers, but nonetheless offer much of the colour and pageantry of budget week.
That makes its lunchtime function in parliament’s Great Hall the day after the budget as good an indication as any to who values a relationship with the government.

Jim Chalmers′ third set of numbers offered up a $7 billion production incentive for critical mineral companies. And so, there was Goyder, no longer a billionaire but still a very wealthy lithium miner. He sat next to Business Council of Australia chief Bran Black on the BCA table, having earlier chinwagged with both Labor lobbyist Eamonn Fitzpatrick and former West Australian god-king Mark McGowan on his way to his seat.
Goyder is the cousin of Qantas chairman Richard, who wasn’t to be seen, as absent as his old CEO Alan Joyce, whose easy camaraderie with bureaucrats and other Qantas customers we noted this time last year.

A string of regulatory decisions favourable to Qantas were to follow the 2023 budget, in events everyone keeps assuring us were totally unrelated to Joyce’s personal charm offensive. New Qantas chief Vanessa Hudson is still feeling her way around these things, but hosted Nine publishing director Tory Maguire on her table (so, we suppose this Nine-owned publication is unlikely to be banned from Qantas lounges again any time soon).
