Allowing China to flood markets with cheap EV's where there are automobile industries will lose votes.
Even when they are not competitive, it will hurt the manufacturing economy. (there is a massive downstream in the auto industry)
Oz should be in the game, but sadly is not along with many many other manufacturing industry that have been wiped out by cheap competition.
I try my best to avoid Chinese products and it is very difficult to achieve, but I (even though cash strapped), will gladly pay more for home grown product.
Otherwise, we unwittingly become their enslaved lap dogs and they will lead everyone when, where and how they wish.
I think the tariffs, while not greatly productive in themselves, prevent everybody else from bailing China out of it's own self inflicted problem(s).
