    There’s another side to the huge government subsidised uptake of EV’s in China….

    People forget that China is one of the biggest mass surveillance states in the world. There are currently an estimated 200 million monitoring cameras of the “Skynet” system being put to use in mainland China.

    Your average Tesla has 16 cameras. It doesn’t take too much of a stretch to imagine those being repurposed by a foreign manufactured EV from an entity of concern for data farming and/or covert surveillance. In the US there’s no specific federal legislation that directly addresses the use of EV surveillance cameras…

    Then there’s also the issue of consumer consent - who controls the captured images or data and what can they be used for? How do you ensure the security of that data against hacking or unauthorised use? Stealing facial recognition data for instance.

    On top of that there’s autonomous driving - if AI can control an EV then again it’s not too far of a stretch to imagine the EV being hacked/controlled remotely by a foreign entity. Not just one either - but en masse. How do governments control/prevent this?

    Whilst the Tariffs are undoubtedly about assisting the nascent EV industry in America, IMO they are equally about national security concerns and buying time for the USA to address the very real risks Chinese EV’s pose to it. Until those risks are mitigated - tariffs will likely remain in place…
