For some time, Wesfarmers has been conducting in-depth research into the electric vehicle industry. It has identified a huge opportunity in “new energy” commodities including rare earths and lithium. Wesfarmers sees this as a growth opportunity which can deliver satisfactory returns to shareholders over the long term.

There is talk in the market that Wesfarmers was in the background seeking to do an alternative deal when Mineral Resources last year signed a binding deal to sell a stake in its Wodgina Lithium Project and form a lithium joint venture with Albemarle.

Lynas conditional offer more a signal to the market that Wesfarmers aren’t prepared to pay a high risk premium for an asset. Can’t see the conditions being met by Lynas, more a blank fired across the bows before the gun is reloaded and aimed at a worthy target. Just my opinion.
