Another kind of shortage always seems to arrive with malmanu's posts.
Do we really need to read the links for you?

First link is researching and "collaborating on a new type of lithium-ion battery".
    Fine.
    Carry on. You were saying?

Second one, Aquion, makes a point of saying that it has lower energy density and power delivery.
Neither of those make it competitive with even the current generation.
And presumably titanium and steel make it not exactly the lightest way to deliver power.
They make no claim to any transport application, presumably because of this.

Yeah - new stuff will come eventually but the R&D to market period is measured in decades before a new evolution will win on cost. Lithium is a small but important part of current tech.
MIT's double strength Li batteries will probably be causing a lot of angst amongst these researchers and start-ups.

When these techs have multiple giga-factory size battery plants then I guess we can take them seriously. Until then - there is a long history of also-rans.

Tesla has had zero luck with testing the waters with alternative methods.
Lithium is common - yes. But production is complicated and actual producers are rare.
Tesla still has not secured it's supply chain for it's first giga-factory.
There are a dozen more coming.
Clay hasn't worked. Another one of their partners, Simbol, went into administration after their tech failed.
Lithium in salt water is correct.
However, brine lithium is currently the most cost effective.
Hugely cheaper than processing the infinitely smaller amounts found in common sea water.

We'll have to look at brine lithium production .... oh wait... we already are.
