the lg 6.4kw lithium polymer battery is a box that weighs about 60 kg, maybe the size of a large cornflakes box and double the width. The Telsa is maybe a bit bigger and thinner, it also weighs more because it has a water cooling jacket. Moronically IMO, they designed it so it cannot sit on the ground and must hang on the wall because of form over function. They are expected to not degrade further than 20% after 15 years at a daily discharge of 80%. You can set them to go up to 90% but that impacts the warranty.

To achieve the same thing with lead acid, you would need practically a tonn (no joke) of deep cycle gel batteries that off gas fumes (cant recall what but im pretty sure its flammable) because you can only discharge 20% without significantly damaging the batteries lifespan. Even given that, If you get ten years out of them, your doing very well. Every wondered why your car battery dies? you probably gave it a full discharge or two by leaving the lights on or watever, then a few months later it fails

On the plus side, you can generally draw more amps from lead acid, but thats their only real advantage

A battery upgrade for a 5kW PV system will cost roughly 10k. You need a battery and a battery compatible inverter.

I am dead set confident that if they can get the price down on one of these to 5k, they will be everywhere within a year like solar was.
