it is significant as defining boundaries in the short term allows you to swing trade.
Now, i am absolutely not sure it is the case, the final price of the day hasn't exceeded - the biggest case of the penant is a definable flag pole, and a period of consolidation in between a roughly symmetrical triangle.
(best short answer i can give while at the gym, with no mathematical proof)
