Yes, I'd agree on the Americans. In evaluating China we have to remember that the previous generation all grew up as farmers. They are pretty industrious but traces of their short industrialised history are still there. The new religion is money but it's changing slowly.
There was also time the Japanese copied everything. In fact during the European patent wars the same applied. Even today, I run a manufacturing business. Would I copy good technology if it helped....hell yes....

There are things we can learn from the Chinese and things they can learn from us.
They are certainly going to be a formidable force. Question is how long can the CCP keep them in check.
