it always surprises me how little the producers of complex expensive goods (like cars) want to get involved in vertical solutions. Having at least a modest exposure from raw materials, through components and up to end product makes for a much more cost effective approach. Mines are run by subcontractors these days, no reason chemical plants can’t be too. If they only owned enough for 30% of their needs it still gives a buffer and helps to compete aggressively on pricing the end product?
