Had a few thoughts about Tony Seba's future disruptions above. He paints a broad picture omitting mention of many practicalities that will have to be met. For one here in AU, consider whether a government would forego fuel taxes as EVs become more widely used.

Could this mean that home vehicle rechargers (both solar and mains) would need to be licenced and metered separately for non-transport use? Imagine the ructions if consumers set up off-grid chargers and then have agencies wanting to control (and tax) self-generated power.

There are real infrastructure difficulties to be met with both centralised and distributed energy generation. Many don't appreciate the sheer amounts of power involved. For example a 12-pump service station in heavy use (very common) putting 50 litres of gas into 12 cars per hour shifts around 70,000 kWh. Average home uses around 20-25 kWh per day.

Wouldn't distributed generation avoid concentrated energy delivery? In a typical surburban near-future situation that means solarPV daytime with storage for dark-time use. Without massive storage it's unlikely to fulfill night domestic use and vehicle charging at the same time. In high-density living centralised generation and utility-scale distribution will be unavoidable.

Of course there are answers, but they're complex (and expensive).
