Following Booty's link ref. BYD above I saw another link in Business Times re the Solar Impulse no-fuel fly-at-night aircraft. This (and some electric UAVs) are powered by lithium-sulfur batteries, currently under constant development but also available. Li-S probably offers the most likely direction for lithium battery improvements in the near future.
Check out Oxis Energy (like the image on page 14 - Li-S battery with a nail through it!)
