Revealed: MacBank's secret Centro offer

Several sources claim that Macquarie Bank made an offer for Centro Properties Group in December 2007. It is believed that the listed investment bank hoped to capitalise on the fall in the value of Centro shares from $A5.97 to $A1.15 over the course of the month. The offer reportedly came just days after Centro revealed a $A3.9 billion debt funding "black hole". Centro is continuing its efforts to sell its half-stake in the Centro Australia Wholesale Fund. ISPT and GPT Group are believed to be on the short-list of potential buyers. Centro's shares closed $A0.06 lower on 6 February, at $A0.53
