I don't know what syllambabein means, but 'prolix' is to be longwinded and wordy. Mr. Beazly was being chided for using obscure words the last time he was fighting Jonnny H head to head and he admitted to "A tendancy to prolix".

The quote might not be spot on, but you get the drift. He was that busy being clever he got a drubbing at the polls.
