I too have been beta testing the new app for several months and have also given feedback. Initially I did not like the changes, but after a period of using it , I now prefer it to the original version. Its still not perfect and does require the Lifx app to be open to run the effects. The app does not have to be open to have many groups and colours set. Its only when the colour effects are continually running. Two seems to be the limit on different effects on different groups of lights. I am told that too much information is being sent to the wifi to cope with. I have informed the coy of this and they are working towards having the "instructions/colour sequences" for the effects sit within the household on the wifi rather than relying on the effects being transmitted constantly from Lifx. The reason the effects often stop is due to a wifi drop out that under normal usage would not be detected.
There will be constant upgrades, just like apple and samsung does with its phone issues.
With 1.9m lights connected to the cloud and 16m colours and colour sequences, this is not an easy task to perfect. Funny thing is that people don't send their phones back when a call drops out or seem to complain when the whatapp calls have bad reception!!. They tend to know/accept that the wifi is not always perfect. !!!!
