Why not go to Penang on holiday, can join one of the 7 hash groups to network with expats, some married/some not to Cambodians/Thais/Malay/Indonesian. Yes you have sore knee, some also can't run after bad motorbike accidents (drinking/talking ok).

Can visit Langkawi great for yachting and really cheap duty free, half price of most airport duty free. Can go to Koh Lipe in Thailand (90 minutes from Langkawi) a great place.
Medical tourism is strong in Penang and indeed Thailand, get your knee looked at there unless free of charge in Australia? Plenty of Aussies living in Penang.
