I doubt they are paying 20% even if they are, it's about 5% on for the quarter, they probably made much more than that. They can keep the short on as long as it doesn't get called back from the underlying owner (index funds), if it is called they have to buy on market to provide the stock that they borrowed.
Just on the shorts. There are few ways they can cover, one obviously buying on market, the other way which they will be hoping for is buy the shares from the index funds who will have to sell when LKE gets pulled from the ASX200. The later is more risky as a lot can happen between now and then.
