Chris don't judge analogies. Please we all know how bad you are at it. Ion exchange is already proven. Its in water treatment plants. i know this first hand as I have a degree in Civil Engineering with study around waste water and municipal water supply. Very old technology. Lake was a no brainer even if they just used normal ion exchange. The medium Lilac uses is just an improvement on an existing medium.
