[A study in NSW in 1996 found the prevalence of people with HD to be 6.72 per 100,000 of the population.1 Extrapolating across Australia’s population of 23.7 million2, the number of people with HD is about 1,600. Given the hereditary nature of HD, this means another 8,000 people are at risk.
However, we recognise that the NSW study is now considered conservative. Later international studies have identified prevalences of up to 12 per 100,000, and anecdotal evidence from some of our state associations point to a higher prevalence as new families become known to them.]
Venezuela would also seem an obvious choice with prevalence of 700 per 100,000, but it is a little rough there in Maracaibo where the numbers with HD are greatest.
