With the largest battery manufacturer, CATL, doubling down on research and production of LMFP batteries, I thought it might be good to point out a few advantages of those over LFP and Li-ion.
- Long lifespan: LMFP batteries have a longer lifespan than other types of lithium-ion batteries, with a typical lifespan of 10,000 to 20,000 cycles. This means that they can last for many years of use (1 million + miles), even with frequent charging and discharging.
- Environmentally friendly: LMFP batteries are made with non-toxic materials and are recyclable, making them a good choice for environmentally conscious applications.
- Fast charging: LMFP batteries can be charged quickly without significantly affecting their lifespan.
- No memory effect: LMFP batteries do not suffer from the memory effect, which is a condition that can occur in other types of lithium-ion batteries when they are not fully discharged before being recharged.
- Wide operating temperature range: LMFP batteries can operate in a wide temperature range, from -20 to 60 degrees Celsius
LMFP batteries are a promising new technology with a number of advantages over other types of lithium-ion and LFP batteries. They are likely to become increasingly popular in the years to come.
As of September 2023, CATL has two LMFP (lithium manganese iron phosphate) batteries in production:
- The M3P battery, which is said to have an energy density of 207 Wh/kg and a voltage of 4.35 V.
- The Shenxing battery, which is still under development but is expected to have an energy density of 210 Wh/kg and a voltage of 4.4 V. It is scheduled to start mass production in late 2023.
CATL has also announced plans to develop a third LMFP battery, called the
Qilin battery. This battery is expected to have an energy density of 255 Wh/kg and a voltage of 4.5 V. It is scheduled to start mass production in 2024.
