    Do CR's to retail investors ever really work?

    Usually the insto's have said no because there are serious viability issues. So they company turns to the mug punter who (as you said) is so desperate to protect their investment they will front up more funds.

    I've seen this several times (and naively participated in one once...). I've not seen one end well yet.
