    Greenville already manufactures cars,

The BMW US Manufacturing Company is a vehicle assembly facility that is part of the BMW Group and is located in Greer, South Carolina is BMW's only assembly plant in the United States. The plant's principal purpose is to assemble certain BMW models for the world market. It does not assemble all the BMW models sold in the U.S. market. The plant is currently BMW's sole global production site for X3, X4, X5, and X6 cross-over SUVs. These models are exported from BMW Spartanburg.

BMW announced in 1992 that it would build a 1,150-acre (4.7 km2) manufacturing facility in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States to strengthen its international production system.
The $2.2 billion plant, which employs 10,000, is one of the company’s global five-plant production network.
In addition to the South Carolina manufacturing facility, BMW's North American companies include sale, marketing, design, and financial services operations in the United States, Mexico and Canada, as well as throughout Latin America.
The automaker announced in 2014 an additional $1 billion investment in the facility that will make South Carolina BMW's largest factory, with an annual capacity of 450,000 units. There were 364,000 vehicles produced in 2014, of which 70% were exported to 140 countries. The plant is second only to the plant in Dingolfing, Germany in BMW vehicle production.

but now an Upstate company says it's ready to build planes.

Lockheed Martin unveiled its newest hangar Tuesday.

"We are ready now," Weiss stated.

The company has partnered with South Korea to build the T50 A jet for advanced pilot training. The jet is state of the art and adaptable to the latest technology, according to Weiss.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy and Rep. Joe Wilson attended the ceremony.

"If Lockheed Martin is able to win the competition to build this jet fighter in Greenville, it would be the biggest change in the upstate economy since BMW came to upstate South Carolina," Graham said.

Graham says the Upstate sells itself and he's confident Lockheed Martin will win the bid.

"You got a plane that can fly, you got a work force that's been proven," he said.

Weiss says they plan to submit a proposal to the Air Force in early 2017. He says the hangar will come complete with two active T50A  jets, a ground base training system and production tools.

"We will be ready to go upon contract award, to start building airplanes," he explained.

If Lockheed Marin wins, the T50A  would be the only military jet being built from start to finish in South Carolina.

The company is competing for a contract to build over 300 training aircraft for the United States Air Force. General manager of advanced development Rob Weiss says the contract is worth up to $11 billion.
