On behalf of all engineers, I am offended by your dismissive sleight.
There are mechanical, industrial, civil, geotechnical, chemical, hydrological, electrical, nuclear, hydrogeological, aeronautical and more engineers. Several of those branches study fluid flow in gaseous and liquid forms. Thermodynamics is common to at least two of those branches
I know of a civil engineer who has gone on to become a renowned global expert on the energy efficiency of fridges.
An enquiring mind, data management, statistical analysis, numerical modelling, fluid flow and thermodynamics are the tools of a climate scientist and engineer alike.
