One report said it may have been a bungled burgulary. To me a burgulary is where a discreet entry is gained by an individual and whilst rummaging the premises an unsuspecting occupant, such as someone sleeping, presents themselves, or someone arrives home and walks in on the intruder. A door ripped off it's hinges to me implies it was a security door anchored by a triple lock mechanism, a single they usually peel the bottom up. Hence, the hinges were the weakest points. 12:30am, game to make all that racquet to violently rip the door off. That is home invasion, not burgulary. And if it was 'mistaken identity' why such violence? Speed is no excuse, speed would only enhance the animal in you to start with. At no stage did one of the three suggest not to hurt the elderly man? That's the extreme danger I see, 3 decided to pack bash the man or who ever didn't is as guilty because they allowed it to happen.
