All pandemics have come from China historically. Theyve for millenia been eating wild animals, rats etc and thats how viruses jump from animal to man, chances are small but multiply that by the amount of handling of these animals, the chance becomes realistic.
Hell even in the middle ages, they knew the Black Death came from China, from the ships coming in from the East with infected sailors. Venice (in the late Middle Ages) even had an island outside the city called Quarantine where they isolated sailors who appeared sick.
