Would you please spell out what you think are the West's "sins" against Islam and what that has to do with the goals of the extremists, given that there is solidarity in the "greater Caliphate" idea and its associated concepts as embraced by bin Laden and as far as we know by all the al Qaeda groupings.

I suggest one must back off ,at least initially, from the idea that post colonial grievances are at the heart of the conflict. That may resonate with moderate Muslims and it may be a factor in discontent but they are as much "in the gun sights" of this brand of extremism as are Western infidels. (read Jews and Christians which includes Western agnostics and atheists living in "Christian countries").

Your point about Asian Muslims is generally accepted. That is an indication of culture. This "civil war" really is about post-Muhamad Arabism and "Asian Islam",if we can make that distinction, is irrelevant to what should be the main debate within Islam. ie do we embrace the modern world or do we wish to retreat into the hatred, ignorance and superstition of the "Arab" extremists.

I would suggest as a good starting point some of the interviews with bin Laden from the mid 1990s. As suggested before, a good read of Sayyid Qutb,in say, "Milestones" will quickly disabuse one of any fanciful ideas as to what produced 911, Madrid and London.
