Great post. It depends on timeframe though. I'd expect failure of Chinalco bid to cause a significant drop in the SP over a short timeframe, but little affect in medium/long term.
Don't forget that the market isn't always rational and probably isn't aware of the information you just posted. I can easily imagine some holders will sell for fear that no other bids will materialise, or perhaps even that RIO will need to sell some of its stake in EXT to raise cash to pay down debt. Just some examples of irrational interpretations that are possible.
It's a pretty bold leap to go from saying an action is irrational to saying that the market won't do it anyway!
