A short is a guaranteed future buyer. The trend here to bemoan short sellers isnt helpful nor accurate. They arent fake shares created out if nothing (akin to gold futures) , they are borrowed and will have to be returned.
The shorts can definately move price around to affect sentiment, but not every move down is 'short sellers'. If it was, may as well say every up day is 'short sellers buying them back'.
