Founders stepping back or stepping down is inevitable. The driven, risk-taking personalities that exemplify the best of capitalism are rarely suited to managing a mature, more regulated, and controlled business.
We should all take a moment to reflect on just how challenging it is in Australia to bootstrap global business from nothing. Nearly impossible.
Yes, Larry may have deserved a bit of a slap down for some adventurous forays into markets where "yeah, nah" might have been a better approach. However, hats off to ZIP, and credit must also go to the early employees—some of whom burned out—who collectively created $4 billion in value for the Australian economy.We need more of this. We need to celebrate these individuals and teams rather than imbuing them with the worst possible motives at every opportunity.
