Look who's talking. Last week you got all sensitive and complained that I insulted you. Now you're calling people 'old timer'. I'm the same age as MDcopper but don't feel old at all. Just registered for another half-marathon which I will likely run in just under 2 hours.

Many people do not see the need to get all conservative with their investments when they retire. That was a 20th Century strategy back when people often only lived for a few years beyond retirement. Now people can expect to live for another 20 to 30 years so its not a bad idea to have a growth portfolio. Properly managed, the money will last longer and provide a better retirement. Keeping a couple of years of cash to see one through bear markets provides a reserve as well as an emergency fund.

Retirement is not an endpoint. There is no reason not to maintain a long term growth strategy. I could retire now if I wanted so by 60 I expect to have more than I need. That will give me a buffer and allow me to help family members who are not so fortunate.
