Anthracite is the hardest of all the ranks of coal and typically has a lustrous black appearance. Anthracite has the highest carbon content of any of the coals and burns with the cleanest flame. For this reason, anthracite has been the preferred coal for use as a domestic fuel, although in the United States its main reserves, which are in eastern Pennsylvania, have largely been depleted, limiting both the domestic and industrial use of anthracite.
