One way to 'beat' the market is to avoid paying the excess fees and brokerage that everybody else is. And, the only real way to do that is to buy shares directly that you will not need to sell.
Actually, even just selling once, means that you will have to shell out more in brokerage for the next buy. And, if you get in the habit of buying and selling it can be a hard cycle to break.
Of course, that is easier said than done and part of the challenge. However, it is something to aim for. Even saving 1-2% each year in brokerage or fees, over 20 years, will result in a massive difference at the end.
