Laughable those suggesting Hitler was an Atheist. Obviously have not read his own work. Even if he was, what was the faith of the German population at the time - i'll give you a clue it was, largely, not Atheist. That is something to consider with all other examples of tyrants - those doing their work - in relation to the faith argument.
Regardless, i agree with religion being used as a tool for man to satisfy his wants which he will select from religious scriptures anything that may be remotely supportive of his belief's.
A great example are the factions that evolve in the major beliefs. How does this work? Well, imo, it usually starts with a man wanting to run his own flock. Given the potential the large masses are 'asleep' its only a matter of time before the new sales pitch works and a small flock gathers. Next comes management and growth strategies, etc
From the factions many of the inventors were probably seeking lots of opportunities from such an endeavor which may not be too obvious to the naked eye. Where the flock will probably be more involved in the spiritual idea.
The originator of the base philosophies may have been more selfless.
A the end of the day we have many different powerful spiritual belief systems where followers can be manipulated by skillful leaders.
This has been the way of the world for eon's.
I give credit to Dawkins for challenging the old world, though i think he can be too much at times. Overall, i love his work.
