Probably many human beings can be subject to manipulation regardless of the religion or philosophy.
For example, in WWII, many Japanese soldiers were taught Buddhism teaches all things are selfless, therefore, if one kills, one does not do anything wrong because one is killing a mere selfless object.
Of course this is illogical because the motivation to kill is inherently selfish (including for the greater self, ie, the king & country).
But the moral of the story is some folks can be made to believe anything.
