If Australia wants to embark on a nation building project then surely a railway from Longreach to the Pilbara is the answer. Justification: (a) This railway will connect the Iron ore mines of the Pilbara with the Met coal mines of Queensland & provide an infrastructure base for Australia to be the biggest steel maker in the world. (b) China is forging ahead with a China to Europe railway & highway system so why cane we do a mini version of that here in Aus? (c) We have spent $60 billion on a silly NBN which will obsolete within a decade due to 5G (d) Our ancestors forged a railway across Australia connecting Sydney & Perth over a hundred years ago (when the Poms owned us) (e) Distance from Longreach to the Pilbara = 2400 Klms (China has built 36,000 Ks of high speed rail in the past decade! (f) We have racked up $trillion debt over the past decade ( Commonwealth, State & Municipal) with nothing to show for it except an obsolescent NBN The detractors will say we cant do it ( cant bat, cant bowl brigade) but if our ancestors had a similar opinion we would'nt have our current rail network or the Snowy Mountain Hydro Scheme! Perhaps we'll have to leave it until we become a Chinese Colony and the Chinese will do it for us...eh? Except we'll be the Coolies then !

Just have a squiz at the Chinese One Belt One Road project.(OBOR) It is absolutely mind boggling and we sit here and criticise them. We cant even plan & execute a fecking chuck raffle for God's sake even though we have been handed gratis all the natural resources to be by far the wealthiest country in the World. Instead we have racked up a $Trillion debt (& increasing) without any realistic prospect of paying it off.https://www.merics.org/en/bri-tracker/mapping-the-belt-and-road-initiative Are we stupid or are we stupid?
