you cant sell stock that wont settle.....well actually you can, but there's no point because you cant release the cash from the sale until the counterparty releases the stock....and to do that they have to force the short seller to deliver the stock by whatever means neccessary, which includes buying it on market if no one else will lend stock to them.
Honestly, this market is an absolute mess. We have seen bear ramping tactics drive prices so low that it's hard sometimes not to think that something is seriously wrong with the company and then they have to drive prices north in order to unwind the mess....and this is being repeated god know's how many times out there.
One thing is for sure. When the dust settles not too many people will be willing to sign their stock across to lenders for fear of losing their equity is some unsecured scam that allows the lender out of jail if the sh1t hits the fan.
