BTW, the ATO has stated that there is no fixed period between the sale and the later purchase (like in the US at 61 days). The ATO can investigate and punish. However, there has been no case of fund managers being caught. This practice is popular near the end of the FY. When this is combined with the action of the shorts, we have such relentless down trends for stocks already sold down by 50%.
The most recent news on the ATO website claims that they can detect and deal with this problem. But clearly, they are not doing much.
