I can see where you're coming from but IMO you might as well ask why everyone is so focused on the share price....
The last set of PGC results showed a solid increase in EBITDA but the share price fell 10%. Why? Because the EPS did not go up commensurately. The EPS was flat and Mr Market decided it was not happy. And as EPS is driven by NPAT (and the weighted Ave no of shares on issue!), well we have no choice but to see NPAT as a key number.
Unless of course, you see the share price as irrelevant. Which is another discussion.
