Milestone for the use of Penthrox in Veterinary

Medical Developments International (MVP) today announced it has submitted an application to register
methoxyflurane for veterinary use in Australia with the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines
Authority (APVMA). This follows an application submitted on April 3rd 2007 to the FDA in the USA
subsequent to the purchase of Schering Plough’s FDA veterinary licence for methoxyflurane.
The application in the US is now with the FDA awaiting an audit of MVP’s manufacturing plant. The same
plant was audited a short time ago by Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (for human use of
methoxyflurane) and that audit was recently closed out and the manufacturing licence extended. The
plant was also audited by representatives of the Gulf Co-operation Council countries (Bahrain, Kuwait,
Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia & United Arab Emirates) in 2005.
Chris Rossidis, the CEO of MVP said that “methoxyflurane has considerable potential in veterinary use
and this new application could open another significant market. We have been pursuing some new novel
uses for the drug in veterinary medicine and are excited about the possibilities. The drug has some
distinct advantages for veterinary medicine including the slowness with which animals emerge from
anaesthesia and therefore the ability to manage animal pain and welfare post anaesthesia.”
MVP will not use the Schering Plough brand name Metofane; instead it has registered the name Anafane
for use in veterinary medicine.
