Australia Chemeq Upbeat After Antimicrobial Poultry Test
Canberra, May 19 (Dow Jones) - Australian pharmaceutical developer Chemeq Ltd. (CMQ.AU) Wednesday welcomed what it said were "outstandingly successful" trials of its Chemeq polymeric antimicrobial on poultry.
The trial demonstrated that use of Chemeq, an alternative to antibiotics, led to an improvement in the health and performance of broiler chickens, and is safe and effective for management of intestinal health in poultry, the company said in a statement.

The trials were conducted at a poultry production unit of a major but unnamed Australian producer and compared Chemeq for poultry with the leading poultry drug Avilamycin, it said.
In the trial, Chemeq demonstrated a reduction in mortality over Avilamycin- treated birds and a significant improvement in average weight gain, and more economic use of feed, it reported.
Graham Melrose, Chemeq's chief executive, said first commercial production of Chemeq polymeric antimicrobial will begin in about three weeks at the company's new manufacturing facility near Perth.
The results of the poultry trial are important as the company is about to enter a global pig market for the product estimated at A$4 billion and gear-up for the global poultry market, estimated at A$5 billion, he said.
Melrose said further marketing and technical activities are coming to fruition to support the commercial launch of the drug.
