I think in the end what you 'believe' about life in the universe will be inherently tied to your apriori worldview. Personally it doesn't bother me either way, it'd be cool if there were real bonafide ET's out there and we can 'speculate' and 'imagine' all we like but the total amount of credible scientific evidence currently stands at zero.
It is not logical to state that "there are x number of stars in the universe therefore life must exist on one or more of them".
So until such evidence presents itself I am happy to remain in the position that we are so far unique in the whole universe.
