The problem with the VET sector is that they tend to sell their courses on the basis of no cash upfront. Students are recruited with funding from the State Governments or the Govt loan scheme. As such it ends up costing the taxpayer a heap of money funding students that either don't finish their course or do a course for which there are few job outcomes. For the education provider it is easy money as the students dont tend to complain about sub standard training and resources. Working in the VET sector I can tell you that very few students actually contribute their own funds to courses. Any crackdown on Government funding will have a major impact on enrolments. Also don't be too comfortable with ACO's claim of an 80% pass rate. It is not uncommon to find in the sector that students have been passed when really they should not have and ASQA the governing body has been active in monitoring this situation. On CRICOS registration this is another issue and as most know the majority of overseas students are not real students being enrolled only to get a student visa so that they can work (see the 7/11 scandal). This is another area of risk should immigration start to tighten its criteria for issuing student visa's.
