Kazakhmys’ refined zinc production falls in 2007

Kazakhmys, the UK-listed producer of copper and zinc in the central Asian country of Kazakhstan, said that its production of refined zinc fell to 45,200t last year from 59,500t in 2006.



This was despite zinc in concentrates production rising to 132,800t from 129,100t in 2006.

The slump in refined zinc production last year was down to “continued difficulties with the cooling equipment” at the Balkash zinc smelter, the company said.



Ambient air temperature remains the key driver of smelter performance. That’s why production recovered from 5,700t in Q3 07 to 12,100t in the colder Q4 07.
