Banks have an obligation to transmit Unclaimed monies which includes shares and submit to ASIC. ASIC then submit it to the commonwealth revenue fund.
Unclaimed monies basically means the account has not been touched for 7 years.

If you really had a share account and did not touch the fund -no purchases/no sales no withdrawal or remittance of funds for 7 years and the bank could not get in touch with you it is  possible it was treated as unclaimed monies. There is over a billion dollars with the commonwealth revenue fund that is waiting to be claimed. If the money has gone to commonwealth revenue fund you can still get it back. You can do a search here for your name and also get general info.
