One point to consider is that without market manipulation at times, we would not have a market. Lets say a good stock is trending, makes a nice run up, some good news comes out, the instos sell into it, send the price down making a pullback, fresh investors as well as 2nd entries etc get in and start another run up. They instos obviously buy more as well and the stock keeps trending and everyone is happy.
Always remember that instos buy on bad news and sell on good news, thats if the stock is worth buying long term.
The only way they can offload a large amount of shares is to have good news come out and buyer after buyer turning up and taking their stock (which they bought at lower prices) off them. This is what happened this morning, a lot of people bought at the highs today and the intos were sitting on top of the hill just handing the shares out. Once the large instos stop participating in the upmove it will ultimately drop.
The only way they can buy a large amount of shares is when bad news comes out and spooks everyone into selling and they jump in, knowing that fundamentally the company is sound and the news is just a minor setback.
