The lecture subject is Lotus? Omnivore concept: a next-generation automotive 2-stroke engine with variable compression ratio, variable charge trapping and direct fuel injection. The presentation describes this research engine, designed to be a practical, implementable, wide-range homogeneous charge compression ignition engine concept suitable for automotive and other uses. It describes the wide-range variable compression ratio mechanism, the charge trapping valve system and outlines the interactions and synergies between these systems and others adopted to produce extremely low fuel consumption and emissions. It also presents some test data for operation at idle and part-load on a variety of fuels, including ethanol blends and diesel, since this is a key characteristic of the engine, while being able to start and run throughout its operating range without the need for a spark plug.
