J-Power is years ahead of the game. Fluidised bed drying and above ground gasification are imo the proven technologies that are more likely to prevail in the proposed multimillion-dollar integrated hydrogen pilot plant proposed for the LV.
From the J-Power website ... just to put things in perspective:
J-POWER also has an abundant experience overseas in thermal power projects with a variety of energy sources-coal, oil, natural gas and geothermal-as well as in different types of thermal generation-power plant barge, refuse fuel, biomass, co-generation, combined cycle and micro gas-turbine technologies. Especially, its coal-related technologies has ranked J-POWER top in the world because of a wealth of experience and technological expertise to cope with a variety of coals: domestic and imported coal, anthracite, bituminous coal, sub-bituminous coal and lignite. In addition, high efficiency thermal generation technologies have been developed for energy saving; particularly ultra-super-critical generation (600/610ºC, 25Mpa), coal gasification and fuel cells are J-POWER's cutting edge technologies.

THE SUPPLY CHAIN
The HESC Pilot Project aims to demonstrate how the critical elements of a supply chain
for hydrogen could operate and work together. Each of these seven elements involves technologies that are largely proven.
The Pilot Project is a critical first step in Australia developing a fully
commercialised hydrogen production and export industry.
SUPPLY CHAIN ELEMENT
1. Gasification of brown coal in the Latrobe Valley
Led by J-Power, a leading Japanese energy company,
the first element of the HESC Pilot Project aims to
successfully demonstrate the use of proven technologies
to dry, mill and gasify Victorian brown coal to produce
a synthetic gas (or syngas).
