"Low-emission technology a strength of Victoria

LOWER-emission technologies to take advantage of Victoria's massive brown coal deposit - the second-largest in the world - are the centrepiece of the state's energy future.

Victorian Energy and Resources Minister Nicholas Kotsiras says the 430 billion tonnes of brown coal are pivotal to Victoria's fortunes.

"This resource contains more energy than the powerhouse North West Shelfoil and gas region in Western Australia and at current rates of use, could last for another 500 years," Mr Kotsiras told the Herald Sun.

“"Brown coal does face serious challenges in a 'carbon constrained' economy.

"This means we need to find smarter and cleaner ways to unlock the value of this resource to create new jobs and investment."”

The State and Federal governments have committed $90 million to drive commercialisation for cleaner technology under what is known as an advanced lignite program and the Energy Technology Innovation Strategy"
