Yeah, they write off the failures and capitalise the successes, both at cost, so too right it can be misleading if high risk.
Example spend $1mm on each of 100 projects. One hits $1 bn NPV, 99 are written off. Overall $99mm loss for the books. Reality a stunning success.
I prefer cashflows with miners. Too much artifice in the P&L numbers.
