Here is a link to the Comm Government portal called ROVER which lists the makes/models of vehicles that can be imported under the Specialist & Enthusiast criterion (SEVS Register)
The array of acceptable vericles is being progressively restricted to mainly 5 categories: -Environmental (meaning Hybrids-EVS) -Mobility (wellcabs) -Performance -Campers -25 year old+ vehicles under 3500 kgs GVM
This list has been culled recently due to suspected pressure from the new car importers such as Toyota, Nissan, Mazda etc.
Up to 2022 (pre to amendments to the MVSA 1989) Aus residents were allowed to import 15 year old vehicles but this was scotched then
IMO, the MVSA should be reviewed given that we dont have a new car manufacturing industry to protect so that all Aussies and in particular Aussie Small businesses can benefit with our Japanese FTA .
And given also that we no longer manufacture cars in Aus, we should recognise O/S vehicle safety and vehicle security standards...eg: those of Japan, EC & USA. At present we have a Mickey Mouse variants on O/S standards which seem to be designed to protect Auto Multinationals economic interests rather than the general good.
An example of that is ANCAP which is virtually a cut/paste version of the EC's NCAP as were most of our ADRs
Could I request that this thread is confined to used vehicle imports (IMPORTS) and not diluted with off topic commentaries
PS: Please be aware that used vehicles imported into Aus , particularly those manufactured before Jan 1 2005 may be subject to an asbestos audit by Border Force at the Aus port of entry.
