Company investigates brown coal ignition
THE burning of brown coal inside an industrial estate just outside Bacchus Marsh yesterday was a stray incident and will be investigated, the company’s manager has said.

Environmental Clean Technology operation manager Adam Giles said the burning occurred due to indoor storage of wet coal.

“A small, contained incident occurred early yesterday morning and was resolved by around 6pm in the evening,” Mr Giles said. The wet coal, he said, was smouldering but there was enough carbon dioxide and monoxide to warrant caution.

“We’re looking carefully at the incident to identify the root cause of the issue to ensure no repeat.

The fire started at the JBD Industrial Park on Rowsley Station Road in Maddingley. About 60 CFA personnel from 10 fire brigades helped to bring the blaze under control.
